Hope and Dread: Therapists and Patients in an Uncertain World
Call for Papers for IARPP 2018 Now Open
Our collective distress with political events in the United States generated the focus of this conference. We will come together as an international community to share experiences and lessons learned from political and social trauma as it affects our patients and ourselves. Our plenaries will take up racism, otherness, immigration and consider the place of truth in our contem porary culture and our clinical work.

We welcome all IARPP members to submit PROPOSALS ONLY for individual papers and/or panels pertaining broadly to the conference theme.

To be considered, proposals for individual papers MUST BE BETWEEN 500 AND 600 WORDS IN LENGTH. Panels should include no more than three papers on a chosen topic. Proposals for panels should be no longer than 1200 words in total, and should consist of both an overview and abstracts of individual papers. Quality of writing, originality, integration of theory and awareness of current literature, clinical implications, and contribution to the field will all be considered.

The Conference Committee may group individual papers that are accepted for presentation with other papers in any session. Discussants for panel may be suggested, but cannot be guaranteed.

FINAL PAPERS will only be requested upon the acceptance of your proposal for the conference. Final papers should not exceed 3000 words and will be due by and no later than MAY 1, 2018.

The Institute of Psychoanalysis and Opera North come together to present an introduction to key concepts in psychoanalysis in a two-day Summer School at the Howard Assembly Rooms, Grand Theatre, Leeds.

This exciting collaboration with one of Europe’s leading arts organisations aims to make psychoanalytic ideas accessible to a wider public. It will bring them to life by exploring the shared territories between psychoanalysis, opera and other performing arts, with their shared aim of telling a story with emotional intensity and meaning, which has the potential to transform. It will demystify psychoanalysis and expand awareness of its role in contemporary society and its contribution to the understanding of the impact and importance of the cultural domain.

Over the two days, there will be lectures on psychoanalysis as a body of knowledge, psychoanalytic interpretation, what a psychoanalyst is and what the training involves, as well as sessions considering psychoanalysis and film, performing violence and translating story to stage.

The event will give participants a unique opportunity to meet practising psychoanalysts and to take part in a dialogue between performers, directors and psychoanalysts to explore the synergy between the two disciplines.

Summer School is for all interested parties, including current undergraduate and postgraduate students from any discipline or background.

Our contributors include David Bell, Don Campbell, Julia Fabricius, Susie Godsil, Veronica Gore, Ken Robinson, Orpha Phelan, Daniel Norman and Andrea Sabbadini.
