LACAN AND KAFKA: Knowledge, Enjoyment and the Big Other
Intensive Day Course
There are only three passing references to Kafka in the entirety of Lacan’s vast oeuvre. In this one-day intensive course, we will scrutinise these passages in their context and show how they can nonetheless throw light on key aspects of Lacanian psychoanalysis.

More generally, through a comparative reading of Lacan’s Seminars and Kafka’s The Castle and The Burrow, we will introduce a number of pivotal psychoanalytic notions such as the object a, the big Other, the fantasy of absolute knowledge, and surplus-enjoyment.

The course will close with an outline of Lacan’s epistemological, ethical, and political stance in his visceral opposition to the so-called university discourse, the contemporary late-capitalist Castle.

Silver Sunday House Tour
Freud and the Later Life
“I never realized that the older one grows the more there is to do. The idea of peaceful old age seems as much of a legend as that of happy youth.”
Freud in a letter to Ernst and Lucie Freud, 20th December 1921

Throughout his life Freud feared old age and infirmity. He was also sceptical about treating older patients, arguing that above the age of fifty “the elasticity of the mental processes, on which the treatment depends, is as a rule lacking” (1905). Yet his own life is an inspiring story of tremendous courage, extraordinary creativity and openness until the very last days in London, while his thought-provoking writings on memory, fantasy and desire shed new and interesting light on the joys and sorrows of later life.

On the first Sunday of October, the Freud Museum joins the nation-wide celebrations of old age called Silver Sunday, by offering a free house tour, a dedicated session and on-site activities dedicated to exploring Freud’s intriguing and often contradictory views on the “gruesome business of getting old” (1935). Freud’s own words, from his works and personal letters, will be accompanying the visitors throughout the day.

As part of the tour, visitors will be given the opportunity to see images of the objects from Freud’s collection associated with the theme, such as figures of old Chinese sages and scholars occupying prominent positions around his desk, or the original gifts he received on each of his ‘painful’ birthdays. The object that often sparks particular curiosity among older visitors is a nineteenth century jade screen, featuring a Chinese character representing shou – longevity. It sits centre-stage on Freud’s desk and is likely to have been the second object smuggled out of Vienna by Princess Marie Bonaparte before Freud’s escape from the Nazis in 1938 (the first one being the figurine of the Greek goddess Athena).

Christopher Bollas
The Democratic Frame of Mind
We are delighted to announce a rare visit to London by eminent psychoanalyst and author, Christopher Bollas, to deliver a lecture and seminar at the Freud Museum.

Following the lecture, those attending the meeting will be asked to express their own views, join the conversation and move it forward, after which Christopher will respond in his own way to the issues raised.

In his lecture (which follows from his Avenali Lecture at the University of California, Berkeley in 2016) Christopher Bollas will argue that democracy is both a political concept and a theory of mind. From the perspective of British object relations theory, which conceptualizes the mind as an assembly of different parts of the self, he will maintain that the dynamics of the internal world apply both to the individual and to the group. Linking the theories of group relations and psychoanalysis therefore allows us to make crucial connections between the functioning of the internal world and the politics of democracy. He will discuss how the US elections of 2016 objectified a breakdown in the democratic process, and he will advocate a “political psychology” that employs psychoanalytical models to help opposing parties negotiate differences by using the psychology of democracy. He will suggest that paranoid states pose the gravest threat to preserving an open mind, essential to the wellbeing of individuals, groups, nations, and the politics of globalization.

Toby Ziegler In Conversation with Darian Leader
As part of Frieze Week in London and to coincide with Toby Ziegler´s exhibition The Genesis Speech, the Freud Museum will host the artist in conversation with psychoanalyst and author Darian Leader.

For several years Ziegler’s work has been characterized by an investigation into the ways that images and objects accumulate and shed narratives, and Freud’s collection of antiquities epitomises this. Freud collected artefacts - statues of Egyptian, Greek and Roman gods, fertility symbols and phalloi – which can be seen as symbols of specific human drives, but also gradually became familiar ornaments, absorbed into their environment; for his patients they may have had completely different associations again, sometimes functioning as triggers in their analysis. The works in this exhibition, though in situ for only a short time, imagine themselves as comparable to this process of absorption.

How useful are Freud and Lacan’s ideas in the clinic? Part 1

The Clinical SITE is presenting a series of three interconnected workshops, facilitated by Philip Hill. This introductory series will explore how a Freudian or Lacanian approach differs from others, and will review different and popular clinical techniques and theories in widespread use today, including those of Jung and Klein, and their clinical consequences.

These radically different approaches to clinical work will be compared, looking in particular at their views of diagnosis, interpretation, working with transference and boundaries or limits.

Participants are asked to bring clinical material to share, including direct quotations from clients’ speech. The workshops assume no prior knowledge.

Workshop 1: Saturday 7th October

What are the differences between need, demand and desire, in and out of the clinic?

Why did Lacan distinguish between ‘the real, imaginary and symbolic’ and why are these useful categories?

Why are the differences between demand, love and desire vital to clinic work?

Why do men typically separate love and desire while women tend to conglomerate them, and what are the consequences for relationships and clinical work?

‘Need’, ‘demand’ and ‘desire’ are to some degree ambiguous ordinary language terms, but they take on special values in clinical work. Differentiating these key terms informs different theoretical and clinical techniques and is essential in allowing an ethical position to be taken by the clinician. What does the clinician’s desire have to do with his ‘ethics’?

What are the differences between ‘love’, ‘transference’ and ‘demand’? What is the relation of demand to desire, and how do shifts occur from demand to desire in childhood, and in clinical work?

How can a clinician distinguish his own transference, arising from his private life outside the clinic, from countertransference that is supposed to arise from the client’s transference?

Wilhem Reich and The Orgone Energy
Artist´s Talk and In-Conversation: Annie Ratti and Richard Noble
Artist Annie Ratti will present her latest research on Wilhelm Reich’s investigations into orgone energy and his influence in psychoanalytic treatments of mental illness; developing one aspect of scientific inquiry that might be termed ‘deviant’ or marginal to mainstream science.

Her artistic research into Reich’s theories proceeds from the presumption that a fresh and critical understanding of scientific methods and scientific truth might be achieved by investigating what the scientific community has defined as its other, the unscientific.

Focusing on the processes of knowledge production at the margins of science, her investigation of Reich aims to show the brilliance and strangeness of his work, which while failing to meet the true conditions of the scientific and psychoanalytic communities nonetheless inspired savagely negative reactions from both. She will develop this irony, what it tells about both Reich and his scientific and psychoanalytic criticism; and that in the understanding and insight that were lost in the process of defining his work as non-scientific. The intention is to recover Reich’s insights through the artistic practice, which entails a sympathetic while at the same time critical engagement with his own discoveries.

This conference brings together psychoanalytic thinkers and fashion experts to offer fresh perspectives in fashion thinking.

Speakers will address a wide range of themes connecting fashion, clothing, style and the body to psychoanalysis, creativity and unconscious emotional life. The conference will also explore the largely neglected role of fashion in clinical and mental health settings – aiming to address the many idiosyncrasies, taboos and paradoxes involved.

The second day will be dedicated to wellbeing and mental health in the context of fashion. Through research and clinical perspectives, it will invite you to unravel two rather paradoxical phenomena: the relative absence of psychology in the fashion world and the apparent absence of fashion in the clinical encounter. The conference will end with a panel discussion on ‘Enclothed cognition’.

Conference

The Czech psychoanalytic society (IPA) invites you to the 2nd Interdisciplinary Conference, which will be dedicated to the legacy of Otto Fenichel. Our conference will be a partial return to 1936, when the 14th Congress IPA – dedicated to the theme of effectiveness of psychoanalytical therapy (which had participation from 198 analysts from around the world) – took part in Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad). Here, Fenichel delivered the paper with which we would like to open the 2nd Conference. Since 1936, more then 60 years have passed, therefore it will be interesting to learn how the theme of psychic change is approached in current psychoanalysis. What are the criteria, concepts and limits of psychic change in different psychoanalytical movements and schools in the 21st century? How has the essence of the goals and therapeutical ambitions of psychoanalysis changed in the last half a century?

As a part of the legacy of Otto Fenichel for us is his interest in external political reality, the conference will also deal with the theme of psychic change from a perspective of medicine, history, sociology and political sciences. We want to pay attention to the phenomenon of an internal change, not only on an individual level, but also in context of institutions, human groups and society as a whole. It is a demanding theme and could be continued in another Fenichel’s Conference, which we aim to organize two years from now. The 2nd conference will also have a Czech section, which will come before the international one (held in the English language).

Says Who? The Struggle for Authority in a Market-based Society
Dany Nobus in Conversation with Paul Verhaeghe
‘We live in an extremely controlling society in which authority has disappeared … traditional authority is lapsing into brute force … and we ourselves must take the first steps towards creating a new social order.’

This was the trenchant diagnosis by Paul Verhaeghe at the end of his acclaimed book about identity, What About Me? Now he returns to investigate another aspect of our lives under threat: authority.

In Says Who? Verhaeghe examines how authority functions and why we need it in order to develop healthy psyches and strong societies. Going against the laissez-faire ethics of a free-market age, he argues that rather than seeing authority as a source of oppression we should invest in developing it in the places that matter. Only by strengthening the power of horizontal groups within existing social structures, such as in education, the economy, and the political system, can we restore authority to its rightful place. Whether you are a parent or child, teacher or student, employer or employee, Says Who? provides the answers you need.

Paul Verhaeghe will give a short lecture, followed by a discussion with Dany Nobus and a Q&A.

Workshop 2: Saturday 21st October

Plato and Aristotle on sexual identity, popular culture and psychoanalytic theory and technique

What objections would Aristotle have to Kleinian and Jungian theory and clinical technique? Why should we be interested and what difference does theory make to clinical practice?
The view of Heraclitus is that, at best, the cosmos is structured like a rubbish heap. This bothered Plato, who countered with his own highly influential theory that is the prototype of Jung’s and Melanie Klein’s. Plato’s legacy lives on in the theories and clinics of Jungians and Kleinians. How and why do Freudians and Lacanians do things differently, why and what are the consequences for the knowledge of the analyst, and for interpretation?

Transference and Countertransference: Is ‘countertransference’ an idea or phenomenon that is on the same footing as ‘transference’? Is it possible to analyse without relying on countertransference?

Technique and interpretation: What is ‘intuition’, and does it have a privileged role in the clinic? What is the relation of truth to interpretation?

Making us Great Again? A Psychoanalytic Discussion of Populism

Presenters: Leon Hoffman, M.D. and Coline Covington, Ph.D., B.P.C.

The presenters will discuss the political dynamics of populism from a psychoanalytic perspective. They will stress the group’s sense of vulnerability and fear and the powerful role the populist leader plays for the group within this psychological state. A charismatic leader is chosen who promises to make the group powerful, perverting the truth by promoting “alt-facts” which fit into the fantasy life of the leader and group. Two approaches are discussed: (1) understanding how vulnerable groups attempt to deal with traumatic experiences by utilizing maladaptive defense mechanisms, such as denial and projection, in order to protect themselves from unbearable negative emotions and (2) understanding that when a large group’s survival and identity are under threat, individual mindfulness is dissolved in the service of defending against the experience of loss and trying to restore a sense of potency within the group.

Gender through the Looking Glass: Whose perspective? Gender Fluidity in Culture, Literature, and Psychoanalysis – Contemporary Viewpoints

With:
Paul Lynch,MD – Psychoanalyst, Boston
Emma Donoghue, PhD – Acclaimed Irish-Canadian Writer/Literary Historian
Sheila Cavanagh, PhD – Associate Professor, Sociology, Toronto
Oren Gozlan, PsyD – Clinical Psychologist/Psychoanalyst
Marco Posadas, MSW – Clinical Social Worker/Psychoanalyst

By crossing the gender divide, the shared, lived experience of people of transgender identity has infiltrated
mainstream consciousness and radicalized questions surrounding gender. What does it mean to be a man or
a woman? How fluid an experience IS gender?

This symposium will look at the way in which the concept of gender fluidity informs developmental
considerations of gender identity and gendered identifications; how it both supports a progressive
understanding of gender, while presenting a challenge to the notions of binary gender ingrained in the
social order. How do we respond to shifting gender mores and previously unthought possibilities of gender
change? Is psychoanalysis ready for such a transition? We will explore these questions through case
material and characters in literary fiction.

Join us for an inspiring day of dialogue from the interweaving perspectives of literary, sociological, and psychoanalytic thinkers.
