THE VIENNA PSYCHOANALYST wants to give not only already internationally established psychoanalysts, but also still unknown psychoanalysts the opportunity to post a self-written and not yet published article on the FrontPage of our online magazine!

Our Users then can leave comments, ask questions or discuss the articles in our forum. Our aim is to provide an international platform where for the first time anyone interested in psychoanalysis can exchange ideas on certain topics.
Articles are welcome in German and/ or English.

In our interview series "in conversation with“, we will briefly present the authors of the leading articles. We want to give our users the opportunity to read the leading article from a different point of view.


This week we are very glad to welcome Michael Wilim from Austria, Vienna:

2015 Bachelor degree in psychotherapy sciences with emphasis on psychoanalysis at the Sigmund Freud University Vienna

Professional experience:

Privat practice since 2014
Practical work as a psychoanalyst at the Sigmund Freud ambulance Vienna (since 2015)
Practical work in the psychiatric field in the Vienna General Hospital “AKH” (2014)
Practical work with the elderly in the state nursing home “Landespflegeheim Berndorf” (2013)
Practical work with drug addicts in drug treatment institution "Zukunftsschmiede" (2009)

DWP: What brought you to psychoanalysis?

Michael Wilim: A group of self-awareness at the university, where I got to know the fascination and the effectiveness of free association.


DWP: If you had the opportunity to talk with Sigmund Freud, what would be the topic?
Are there any specific questions?

Michael Wilim: I would like to discuss with him the concept of ´evenly suspended attention´ and their potential measurability

DWP: According to Bruno Bettelheim and the importance of fairy tales in childhood. Will you tell us your favorite fairy tale? And do you see parallels to your own adult life?

Michael Wilim: Pinocchio ... My father often told me that I have a big nose ... and maybe I was are not always completely honest in my childhood;-)


DWP: I dream,….

Michael Wilim: Frequently and vividly.


DWP: What do you find good or particularly good in psychoanalysis and is there anything you do not like about it?

Michael Wilim: For me, psychoanalysis is perhaps the only method that attacks problems at the root and not simple cuts only the "weeds" at the visible end. Particularly surprisingly I feel the pictorial language of dreams and their analysis - as Freud once said: "The interpretation of dreams is in fact the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious”.

A clear disadvantage of this thorough and professional treatment happens to be their duration and the associated costs for the patient.
However, I am firmly convinced that you have to take yourself and your needs seriously and that you should make yourself a gift to create a lasting change.


DWP: What challenges did you have to face during your analytic training?

Michael Wilim: Actually, there were two major challenges: On the one hand, the balancing act that you have to create between financing of your education and your training and on the other hand, the development of the understanding of the association between theory and practice in a personal, psychoanalytic identity.


DWP: Do you have a favorite Freud - quote?

Michael Wilim: "You can´t appreciate the present without understanding it, and you can´t understand it without knowing the past."


DWP:  Are there other psychoanalysts, in addition to Sigmund Freud, who you like to study?

Michael Wilim: During the course of my training and my practical work I have developed a certain sympathy for the theory of object relations. Thus I could list Klein, Winnicott and Bion.
